Aber's last home game ends in stalemate

Newtown keeper Dave Roberts kept a clean sheet

Newtown keeper Dave Roberts kept a clean sheet

Aberystwyth Town’s last home game of 2012/3 ended in a disappointing goalless draw with Newtown which edges both sides closer to safety and just about keeps the Black and Green in the hunt for a European Play Off place at the end of the season.

On an overcast day on the Ceredigion Coast the game started slowly, and there were few real chances to excite the crowd in the first twenty minutes. Declan Carroll and Cledan Davies both blasted wide for Aber after nice moves, while for the visitors Luke Boundford fired over from close range, and Nicky Ward’s free kick sailed past the upright. Chris Venables drew a great save from Dave Roberts in Newtown’s goal, and then Ward should have headed Craig Williams’ cross home, but the half ended scoreless.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with half chances. Boundford was twice denied by Mike Lewis, who was looking reliable in the home goal, and Wyn Thomas sent a free kick just past the right hand post in front of the Dias Stand. The evergreen Glyndwr Hughes came on and made an instant impact, setting up Jordan Follows for a shot which Roberts punched away, and causing all sorts of problems for the Newtown defence with a belligerent display which threatened to turn the game in Aber’s favour. Mark Jones hit the post and then Venables again brought an excellent save from Roberts, but when Gavin Cadwallader headed a late chance over the bar, it was clear that neither side had done enough to win the game.
